Our Lady Queen of the Missions Convent
Salt Lake, Kolkata (1998)

Salt Lake City, Kolkata, is a planned Satellite Township. It was developed from 1958 to 1968, to accommodate the rapidly increasing population of Kolkata. It is now a hub of economic and social expansion. The city is beautifully designed and offers many facilities for hospitals, schools, computer schools. Almost all government offices are situated in and around this city. It is relatively pollution free area, and one can enjoy fresh air although the temperature is slightly higher than the old city. The residents of the area primarily retired officers, politicians, and more an aristocratic community.

The most interesting feature of this city is that no worship places are to be erected irrespective of any religion. It is predominantly a multicultural Hindu community with few Catholic families whose needs had been looked after by the Capuchin Fathers for a considerable period of time. Since inception, our school in Park Circus provided secondary school education to the students (Class X). The government has since decided to include higher secondary classes (XI &XII) as part of the school education programme, and not college level education programme as was previously the case.

The Park Circus School was unable to offer the higher secondary classes to the students as the existing infrastructure did not offer any scope for expansion. The students therefore had to seek admission for higher secondary classes elsewhere and parents found this transfer extremely difficult. It became challenging for parents to find good schools for their children which offered a full education programme.

The RNDMs responded to this acute need by deciding to search for a suitable new school location in order to offer continued education for our students until university. The availability of an appropriate location was a major challenge in the old city of Kolkata. Nevertheless, after securing the necessary permissions from the CLT, Sr. Smitha Thomas Thuppalangiyil, the Provincial, Sr. Rose Mary, the Principal and Sr. Mary Mathew, provincial bursar, searched for a good plot of land in a suitable location, with the support of parents and friends. Finally with the help of Mr. Ansu Sur, a friend of the sisters, the RNDMs acquired 32 cents of land leased for 999 years, from the government of West Bengal in Salt Lake, Kolkata. This purchase marked the Golden Jubilee of the school in 1996.

The sisters also decided to further develop the school programme at this time, by offering higher secondary classes in the existing premises with the Commerce stream as a separate single stream. This change in the school took place during the time of construction of the new school. February 9th, 1998 marked a red letter day for Our Lady Queen of the Missions School in Kolkata, as the foundation stone was laid for the new school building in Salt Lake, by Fr. Bruylants SJ, then Principal of St. Xaviers School, Kolkata. Guests included Fr. Roche SJ, a gifted architect who had assisted in the design of the building, Mr .Ansu Sur who had assisted in the purchase process, many RNDMs, and friends of the RNDMs. The construction work progressed slowly and steadily while we engaged parents and other collaborators to generate the finance required for the building. Archbishop Henry D’Souza offered immense help in looking for funds and through his intervention Miserio aided to put up the auditorium which would eventually be put to use in offering Holy Eucharist for the Catholic community in the area.

On 6th January 2001 the Governing body of Our Lady of Missions School decided that a new school would be formally established, and the high secondary classes moved from Park-Circus to Salt Lake, for the academic session commencing in 2001-2002. The launch of new school and welcome reception for the community took place on 25th March 2001. Our Superior General Sr. M. Bernardine Mullaveetil who graced this occasion, spoke about the importance of living RNDM values here in this new place. She then blessed and missioned Srs. Mary Sebastian Thekkekara and Suja Sebastian for the new location. We were fortunate to welcome the participation of a good number of our sisters for the ceremony.

On 31st March 2001, the school was blessed by Archbishop Henry D'Souza in the presence of Sr. Deepthi Maliackal, Provincial, Government officials, dignitaries, principals of schools, parents, teachers, students and RNDM’s. The Archbishop gave an inspiring speech and thanked the Government. officials for permitting the sisters to build this new Catholic School. He prayed that God would bless the efforts of the sisters and that the school would be a beacon and witness of God’s love. Classes commenced as planned on 4th April 2001 for pre primary students, and on 17th April 2001, for class XII and Class XI. Three academic streams of Arts, Commerce and Science were launched, reflecting the three central academic focal areas on the West Bengal government curriculum. We were delighted to welcome Sr. M. Bonaventure Chakalayil to our community at this time, while Sr. Joicy Madassery commuted from Park Circus almost everyday to organize the school. Further new admissions were accepted during the following year of 2002, for classes II to IV while construction work continued. Sr. Smitha Thomas Thuppalangiyil was appointed as the principal of the school on 1st April 2003. By 2004, the entire building was completed. The new classrooms, library, and laboratories were furnished through the continued support of the Provincialate and the generosity of our parents and benefactors. The school received the Non Objection Certificate from the Government of West Bengal, a Minority Certificate from the Central Government and Affiliation for ICSC.

Since 2004, the Salt Lake school has grown in strength with an average of 1500 students attending in an academic year. The students have excelled both in academic and extra curricular activities and the school has earned a good reputation in the city. As the first missionary Congregation and the first Christian school to be established in the new city of Salt Lake, and keeping in mind the mission of the congregation, the sisters continue to strive to proclaim the values of the Kingdom by their way of life and their availability to be at the service of all. The sisters place much importance on serving the Catholic community who join them for Eucharist and other celebrations, whilst giving equal priority to education.
